Over the years, a number of people over the year have expressed a desire to run the route in the opposite direction, starting in Rugby and ending in Lebanon Saturday night. Even though the Smackdab Run remains officially northbound-only, this year recognizes a start of new variation of the event, the Badkcams Run (“Smackab” spelled backwards). Three Smackdab veterans from the Rugby area inaugurated the reverse route. Their efforts will earn a special not-a-Smackdab patch, which has the order of states listed in reverse and an inverse accent color, and special mention in the Smackdab finishers’ roll.

Smackdab and Badkcams riders met serendipitously as they crossed paths at a gas stop in Wolsey, South Dakota.

Later in the day, the riders’ southbound route took them through heavy rains that developed throughout most of Nebraska and Kansas that Smackdabbers were able to avoid.
